I’ve always wonder how much teachers pick up on about their students, can you tell which ones are sad, nervous, or which ones smoke or are out doing drugs? Looking back I wonder how many teachers new more than they led on….

I have a few questions like this in my inbox right now, so I’m going to try to sum up.

In my experience, teachers can usually tell when something is going on.  This does not occur in every situation or with every student, however.  Additionally, we are not mind readers.  We don’t know specifics of what is going on until students engage with us.  I try to get to know my students and make a connection with them, so I can try to understand their needs, strengths and areas for improvement both academically and personally.  If there were problems going on, I’d try to support them in any way I could and direct them to more specific supports.
