Hi! I’m a first year teacher and am a long term sub at an all boys school. I have a student who is ambitious, already a leader in school, and is very interested in doing well and making something of his life but he feels like he is growing apart from his only 2 friends who are unambitious and immature. I listen to him and am present when he wants to vent. Should I give advice? I don’t even know what to say to begin with. “Leave them in the dust” seems too abrasive for a ninth grader. Thoughts?

You could say something about how it’s only natural to move on to new phases in life, and can still connect with your old friends in different ways.  He has to feel comfortable moving on and only he can make the decision.
