normally i hate books but i feel like this year i want to turn that around. what books would you recommend in a teacher’s perspective¿

It all depends on your interests.  Usually, books are chosen for use in school because of their connection to society and that there are life lessons in them.  Sometimes it can be hard to connect with them, but try putting yourself in the characters’ shoes.  For some differing perspectives on society, I would recommend The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, Indian Horse by Richard Wagamese, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, I am the Messenger by Marcuz Zuzak, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood, Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli and Theories of Relativity by Barbara Haworth-Attard.

So there’s this teacher at my school who seems to HATE all students, and I’ve always kept clear of him. Anyway, a while ago I was let out late for class (was dismissed via shirt colour) and when I went to my locker he started screaming at me. I told him what happened but he said “well that’s your own fault!” called me a “horrible student” and yelled at me until I was outside. I have social anxiety and now I can’t even make eye contact with him. help.

Have you tried talking with a teacher you feel comfortable with about this?  If you have difficulty talking to this teacher about this, perhaps another teacher or caring adult in the building could be your advocate.  There should be some kind of support system to help students through situations like this.  A parent/guardian could also intervene on your behalf because of the way this teacher made you feel.

What do you or other teachers do when a good student is going through rough times and might fail?

The most important thing is the well-being of the student.  Sometimes school has to come second, third or even fourth in priority to their other needs.  Each individual student and their situation is different so it always depends, but teachers usually work together to support the student in whatever way possible.  Sometimes that can be providing them with a quiet space in another part of the school, counselling, connecting to community resources, accommodations in class, etc.  The student’s well-being definitely comes first though.
