Hello! I’m an English Education major, and I’m not sure what grades I’d like to teach yet. Ill be certified in secondary, but I’m stuck between middle and high school. I’m not sure if you’ve ever taught middle school or know anyone who has, but if so, can you just let me know how the classroom management worked in the middle school classroom? PS. I LOVE your blog! Hilarious :)

I have never been in a middle school; my region has elementary schools (K-8) and high schools (9-12).  I did a teaching placement in a grade 8 classroom, and classroom management was a bit easier than high school due to the fact that students were still in the school of their younger days where certain expectations are in place, they are with one teacher all day long and stay in the same room all day.

You always just need to be yourself, and update your strategies for whatever class you have.  I don’t have one specific method for every class I teach.

What do you think about the Finnish schooling system & teaching methods? Do you think it’s more effective, & what are the pros/cons? I’d very much love an outsider opinion! I’m a student on my first year in upper secondary school. (Lukio in Finnish)

I am not educated enough in how the Finnish system works.  I’ve seen a couple of infographics and there seems to be great ideas.  However, I’d have to be actually IN IT to make a full argument.

hey. i’m a first-year high school english teacher and i am completely exhausted. i feel like i’m only doing about 50% of what i need to do to help my students and do my job right, but i’m working almost constantly. i am so stressed out i’m going home and crying almost every day. i have no life outside of work anymore, and i feel like a complete failure all the time. it’s only november but i’m already seriously hoping i get hit by a car on the way to work. is this normal?

Please talk to someone in real life about your concerns.  It is not normal to wish to die due to your profession.

You are doing all you can do to help your students; that is perfectly fine.  I have only become better and more effective in my profession with time.  I have also asked for help with borrowing resources, team-teaching, etc.

Balance is very important for your life.  It takes time when you’re in your first year, but you need to take a step back since it is affecting you so much.  It’s not the end of the world if your assignment didn’t have the picture placed perfectly or if you didn’t help students in the club this week.

Take care of YOU first, otherwise you can’t take care of anyone else.

Please ask for help.  Teachers sometimes think they need to do it on their own, but WE ALL NEED HELP!  There are tons of us out there ready to help, even in your own school!

And always remember that you’re awesome for dedicating yourself to teaching children.  Also remember that you’re awesome for being you, and you need to live your own life too.
