Hello, I just discovered your blog and your passion for teaching is pretty inspirational. My aunt has been a math teacher for many years and my mom is about to graduate from university and begin her teaching career. I recently had the pleasure of sitting in on a Junior High science lesson that was being given by my aunts coworker and I found the experience to be quite thrilling. I guess my question for you is: what made you decide to pursue this career, and did you have any doubts along the way?

There are always doubts when one moves on to a new stage or challenge in their life; I have doubts regularly about what I’m doing or how I’m helping someone, but it’s something I persevere through because I know I love what I’m doing and that I’m making a difference.

My AP economics teacher and I always got along so well and I often stayed in after school to just talk to him. During class or in the hallways he always winked or smirked at me. The day of my graduation this summer he told he that he liked me very much and hoped to meet again soon. We went out for dinner a few weeks ago and he invited me to see this concert in december. I think I have a crush on him but I don’t want to interprate anything wrong … What’s your opinion? He’s 31 and I’m 18

It doesn’t matter if you’re over 18; he is still a teacher, even after graduation. It is crossing boundaries.

How do you feel when the class is rowdy and the TA isn’t helping
You have a TA!???
I’ve had some peer tutors in a few classes before, and I feel the teacher is in charge of the class. You are the teacher, it’s your class, you need to take charge. The TA/tutor is there to support the students in their work or to do some administrative assistance, like photocopying, some marking of tests, etc.
If the specific job description of TA where you’re from is different, then have a discussion with them about how the two of you can collaborate more effectively.
