I was just wondering whether you can tell when a student has bad days? A couple weeks ago i had had an awful day and i couldn’t concentrate at all in maths, i was so upset. My teacher marked my book a couple of days later, and on that day’s work he wrote “maybe you could have done a little more work today? I don’t think you were on your best form.” I just wondered whether sometimes teachers can tell that if their students aren’t working hard it’s for a reason and not because they’re lazy.

Sometimes I can, sometimes I can’t.  I am not a mind reader, and some people are really good at hiding their problems.  Do you notice when your teacher has a bad day?  I have come into class multiple times not feeling I could concentrate or teach at all, but have to park it at the door and show my students that I’m fine and let’s keep going with all this fun work!  If you can’t tell all the time about other people, then we can’t tell all the time either.

Usually if I notice something, I will try to talk with the student one-on-one.  An alternative for you is to even talk to your teacher privately at the beginning of class to explain that you’re having a rough day.  You wouldn’t have to go into detail, but just so they are aware that you might not be able to focus well that day.

my physics teacher is so bad. he has no sense of discipline, and rambles on about things that aren’t important, teaches what he wants, and one lesson just scrapped the lesson plan and spent an hour watching dancing videos. i feel like i’ve not learned anything since february, but multiple people have complained and nothing’s been done. i’m getting a’s so people thing there’s nothing wrong, but that’s because i have to study my butt off and relearn everything myself. do you have any advice? sorry

That is unfortunate you are not getting the education you want/deserve.  One thing you could do is actually talk with your teacher privately and politely about your concerns.

Otherwise, you would have to look into the complaint system within your school board; do the complaints stay in the school or go to the school board?

Hi, have you ever taught at the school/s you went to as a student? Or do you know anyone who has? I am considering teaching at my old high school once I graduate university and am just looking for advice or any personal experiences. Thanks in advance, you have a fantastic blog!

I honestly find it weird to work in the school I attended.  I have only done so about 5 times as a supply teacher, and I did not enjoy it.  I’m sure it would have become easier/better if I was there permanently, but it was strange for me to have a different connection with my old teachers, where I can start calling them by their first names, know things about their lives I still think I shouldn’t know, etc.  It would be up to you to discover what fits for you.

Good luck in the job hunt!

hey you, have you heard of the TCC? how do you react on students crushing on you? and do you realize it without them confessing their undying love to you or anything? i’m a little curious since i am really in love with a teacher who’s not teaching me anymore but we are still talking a lot… have you ever… like… saw a student of yours on that man/woman-level instead of the teacher/student-level if you know what i mean? :)
