Hi! I was wondering how teachers feel about shy students? I’m really reserved, I get anxious speaking up in class and it holds me back from participating even when I want to. do teachers understand? How do you guys feel about it?

Something that always helps is trying to speak one-on-one with each of your teachers.  I know this can be scary, but we are in our jobs to help you and other students.  How would we know unless you tell us?  For the most part, we are always willing to make accommodations to help students be successful and overcome what they’re going through.

If you don’t feel comfortable talking to your teachers, try talking to one adult in the building you have a good relationship with, whether it’s a guidance counsellor, previous teacher, coach, etc, and ask them if they would speak to your current teachers.

We can’t help you unless we know; we aren’t mind readers, but we will help where we can.

Good luck.

Ive just started my first teaching job and told all the students to email me before the weekend. Out of a total of 20, only 5 have done it. I feel like I’ve failed already. How can I address it in the next lesson?

First off, you are not a failure.

Secondly, sometimes students forget; sometimes they are worried about having such direct contact with someone they don’t know very well yet; sometimes they have jobs; sometimes they don’t know what they’re doing and don’t want to look stupid, so think it’s better off to not respond.

I am not sure about what kind of class/course you teach or the expectations you’ve laid out in your classroom (or what is even expected in your school), but I would then just have the students be ready to show you what they have done in class.  When you next expect them to do something like that, look at what you’re asking them to do and maybe be more specific.  Give them reminder checklists, or sign up for Remind: https://www.remind.com.

Reflect on your own feelings and what you need to do based on the needs and experiences of your own students.

Good luck!  Keep believing in yourself.
