Can you explain why every teacher underestimates the bull shit students might have to deal with outside of school, and why they assume that because someone doesn’t tell you specifics about something it’s because it didn’t happen?

I was unaware you have met every single teacher to know that they all do this.  While I have met a few teachers that don’t like to hear about students’ issues outside of school, the majority I know are very supportive and understanding, and those who are not are forced to be more flexible by administrators.

If you are having an issue with your teachers, speak to them privately about your concerns.  If that doesn’t work, try talking with a guidance counsellor or administrator.  Hope you can get some support.

I don’t know if this is the sort of question that you answer but, as a teacher, how does it make you feel when a student discloses something to you? I know everyone’s got a different attitude to this sort of thing but, on the whole, how is talking to students about their (often difficult) mental states viewed?

I would feel glad that we have made a connection where the student feels comfortable sharing with me.  I would listen to them and try to help them where I could for whatever they tell me.
