What made you want to become a teacher? Personally I think that teachers do not get enough credit for what they do. They have one of the most important roles in this world. They are the ones who prepare the future generation, and create engineers, scientists, directors, business men/women etc… I really do see teachers as an inspiration.

Thank you for your nice comments.  This answer is to a few questions that asked me the same question:

I have always known I wanted to be a teacher.  My younger brother has autism, so I have grown up teaching and helping him, and as I progressed through school I just realized what exactly I wanted to teach.  I also feel I am in teaching more to help students any way I can, as compared to teaching them about “a bunch of stuff” :).

How do teachers feel about students sharing personal information? I’ve been absent from classes, and then I told one of my teachers that I have troubles at home, lots of arguments, and one parent is threatening to kick me out of the house, so I have been distracted from school work. I just kept getting these vibes that he was getting uncomfortable and didn’t want to hear about my personal life and I felt as if I had crossed some kind of boundary. It was so AWKWARD.

That is too bad your teacher looked uncomfortable, as he should be trying his best to make YOU feel comfortable telling him this information.  No, you have not crossed a boundary at all.  You just wanted to explain your situation, and that is perfectly fine.

I hope things work out for you.

Hi, a few friends and myself think that our teacher may suffer with a personality disorder such as bipolar or depression. They reference to self harm and suicide frequently and we are worried about them and don’t know what to do. Any help or advice would be largely appreciated. Thanks!

It is nice you are concerned about your teacher.  If you know of another teacher in the building that is close with this particular teacher, I would talk to them about your concerns and that you hope something positive will happen.  You could even talk with your teacher to say that you are concerned, or even take some time to talk to them about other things, say you enjoyed the lesson, etc.

I hope things work out okay.

what’s an ISU essay? is that the school where you teach?

ISU means Independent Study Unit. It is an entire unit of work that is assigned at the beginning of the semester and is due near the end of the semester. There is usually some time given in class, but, for the most part, the students must complete it independently. It is different for every subject, grade and level. Usually, in an English class, the students have to read at least one book on their own and complete a few projects, including something written (like journals or an essay), something oral (like a seminar or presentation), and something creative (like a model of something). It is different everywhere as it is up to the teacher.
