Hey, I was wondering if you could offer me some advice? I want to be a teacher so badly, but job chances for teachers are terrible in my country. And now I’m torn between following my dream and choosing a job with a certain financial security. I have no idea what to do. I’ve taught before, and I loved it. Honestly, I do not want to have to do something different.

Job opportunities for teachers are not in a good situation either where I live, but I keep working hard to do what I love.  Will you be happy making a lot of money if it is not something you love?  What is more important to you: being happy or having money?

If you really want to teach, show that you want to be involved by volunteering in schools either during the day or with extracurriculars, depending on your availability.  Take additional qualification courses (I just started my 4th year of teaching and I’m currently taking my 6th course to widen my qualifications), because administration like teachers who complete their own professional development.  You also, unfortunately, need to sell yourself.  Any time you apply for a position, you should have an administrator you know put in a good word for you with the hiring committee, otherwise you won’t get a call back since there are hundreds and hundreds of applicants.  Show that you love what you do, and things will come together.

Everything will come together eventually when you take the time to follow what you want to do.  It is always hard at first, but that is how you know it is worthwhile.  Would it be rewarding if it wasn’t challenging?

Good luck.

even though I know there is less than a 1% chance of you being my teacher (I live in the states) I was hesitant to follow you because I was scared my teacher would ever find my tumblr :P It’s not the most appropriate page. LOVE your page! :) I’m a HS senior

Honestly, your teacher will not care about your tumblr page if he/she did find it.  Your personal life outside of school is your personal life.

Thanks for the comments 🙂

So I have this issue, where ever since 7th grade (When I moved to America), almost all my teachers have pulled my away at some point to ask me if I’m smoking pot. Now, I don’t- I never have. I’m just… happy. I’m a very happy person. Why would my teachers assume that I was high?

If you are comfortable doing so, privately ask your teachers why they think this way, and explain that it regularly happens.  You won’t know until you ask, and you can clarify any misconceptions or stereotypes they might hold, unfortunately.

Do you have to be perfect at public speaking to be a teacher?

No, you do not.  I would say you just need to find your niche, meaning what grade levels you are more comfortable with, and that is what will work for you, and being in front of a class becomes easier with time.  I sometimes speak too fast, say “um” a lot, forget what I’m saying, forget what words come next in a sentence, so it’s all good.  We don’t expect our students to be perfect, so don’t expect it out of yourself either.  We can only do our best.
